Santa Claus: We all know him as a jolly good fellow if there ever was one, but really, any true icon is open to interpretation. Whether you call him Santa, St. Nick, or Father Christmas, these holiday stories bring him to life in heartwarming, funny, and festive ways.

no no 9780593528488 I Am NOT Santa Claus! by T. L. McBeth

Can you tell if the man in this book is the real Santa Claus? He says he isn’t Santa, but several clues indicate otherwise. This hilarious Christmas romp features dry humor that will have kids giggling through every page leading up to the satisfying conclusion.

9781536238839 Mr. Santa by Jarvis

What would you do if you had one-on-one time with the big man himself? When a little girl comes face-to-face with Santa on Christmas Eve, she wastes no time asking every question she can think of. This adorable book is the perfect addition to every holiday collection!

9780593524978 Santa’s First Christmas by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Sydney Smith

After a night of delivering presents, Santa usually just grants himself an extra half-hour of sleep before resuming his duties. This year, to show their appreciation, the elves decide to surprise him with a festive celebration: they start with breakfast in bed, then cut down a splendid spruce, deck the North Pole with lights, and whip up some cookies for the jolly old man himself. Cute and cozy, this story is sure to become a Christmas classic.

9780593178140 The Real Santa by Nancy Redd, illustrated by Charnelle Pinkney Barlow

A young Black boy wonders if the real Santa looks like the Santa in pictures, commercials, and at the mall, or if Santa may look more like him. Can he stay up late enough to find out? Full of heart and holiday spirit, this cozy story is a joyous celebration of the season, identity, and representation.

9780399257841 The Animals’ Santa by Jan Brett

The animals are excited for the arrival of Santa in this entertaining book by the beloved Jan Brett. As Christmas approaches, the forest creatures speculate on who the animals’ Santa is — could it be a moose, a badger, or a wolf? Little ones will love the big reveal at the end.

9780593702871 It’s Not Easy Being Santa Claus by Marilyn Sadler, illustrated by Stephanie Laberis

Santa feels overwhelmed with his holiday to-do list and gets grumpier by the minute. To get out of his rut, Santa tries out some new roles, but none of them make him feel better. Before long, Santa realizes the only way to find peace and happiness during the holiday craze is by being himself.

9780593350805 The Legend of the Christmas Witch by Dan Murphy and Aubrey Plaza, illustrated by Julia Iredale

A Christmas story unlike any other, The Legend of the Christmas Witch chronicles the life of Kris Kringle’s long-lost twin sister, Kristtōrn. A powerful witch, Kristtōrn’s tale will change everything you thought you knew about the holiday.

9780593110256 Santa in the City by Tiffany D. Jackson, illustrated by Reggie Brown

Christmas is only two weeks away, and Deja is starting to get worried. With no chimney in her city apartment, how can Santa possibly find her? And with so many children in the world, will he have time to visit her? Thankfully, Deja’s family helps her to see the magic of Christmas all around her. This book is sure to be a family favorite for years to come.

9781770498242 The Day Santa Stopped Believing in Harold by Maureen Fergus, illustrated by Cale Atkinson

The Santa story gets flipped in this beyond-clever read where, instead of the focus being on a kid waiting for Santa’s special visit, it’s on Santa who anticipates hearing from a favorite kid. Santa can’t believe Harold writes him such nice letters, leaves such great cookies — but what if Harold isn’t real? A great picture book for the season, this one especially resonates with kids who are at an age where they start to wonder if Old Saint Nick really exists.

9798217111633 Little Santa by Jon Agee

Every hero needs an origin story and though there are other several tales of how Santa became Santa, Agee’s version is extra cute. Baby Santa loves the North Pole, but his family doesn’t. When his elders decide to move to sunny Florida, Little Santa is miserable, until a blizzard comes to the rescue. When little Santa goes up the chimney to seek help for his relatives, he meets none other than some reindeer and elves willing to help and … well, it would be a spoiler to go much further.

9781580892940 Santa Retires by David Biedrzycki

This one might be a little worrisome at first for Christmas-loving kids … because in Santa Retires, Santa and Mrs. Claus are headed towards the tropics. After years of gift-making and delivering (that one big night takes a lot out of a guy!), Santa needs to call it quits. But, the existential question surfaces: Can Santa be jolly without Christmas?

9781770495562 When Santa Was a Baby by Linda Bailey, illustrated by Genevieve Godbout

An adorable Santa origin story that the whole family will love! Even as a tiny tot, Santa did things his own way. He has an affinity for the cold, likes to give away his birthday presents, and has an odd obsession with chimneys. But what makes this book so special is seeing how proud Santa’s parents are of their child and how they love and support him just as he is.

We all want our kids to read. Then, they start reading and we question whether what they’re reading is good enough. We’re not always easy to live with, us parents.

Oftentimes, teens avoid the classics not because they’re unsavory, but because they feel intimidating.

These 11 favorites are recommended reading for anyone who’s ever trembled in the face of the Classics shelf. And who knows, with these as gateways, the Russian novelists could be next.

no no 9780553494297 The Legend of Bass Reeves by Gary Paulsen

From the author of beloved books like Hatchet and Dogsong, this classic fictional account of the legendary lawman Bass Reeves is a must-read. Reeves was born into slavery, but went on to become the most successful Federal Marshal in the United States. Gary Paulsen’s accessible prose and fast-paced plot will keep teens engrossed until the last page.

9780440413288 Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

Younger teens will love this Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Award-winning novel. Bud doesn’t know who his father is, but he believes a flyer his mother left offers a vital clue. With his few personal possessions, Bud strikes out on a whirlwind adventure to search for his father and discovers himself along the way.

9781101990322 Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

No list of classics for teens is complete without Treasure Island. This story about teenage Jim Hawkins’s voyage across the seas is fraught with peril, mutiny, ruthless pirates, and the dream of finding untold wealth. It has stood the test of time and captivated generations of readers.

9780147514004 Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Readers of all ages love this charming Canadian classic about an orphan girl who gets adopted and moves to a picturesque home on Prince Edward Island. Her spirited personality, fiery passion, and penchant for mischief made her a favorite among readers for over 100 years. Teens will find a kindred spirit in Anne as they follow her adventures in friendship, love, and life.

9780142401125 Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor

This Newbery Medal-winning novel started the Logan family saga and moved millions of readers through its heartfelt story. Told through the eyes of young Cassie, readers follow the family’s fight to hold on to their land in the Depression-era South. Cassie’s passion, independence, and pride in her heritage make her relatable and admirable to modern readers.

9780143105770 The Short Novels of John Steinbeck by John Steinbeck

Classics tend to be longer than modern novels, which can deter some teens from picking them up. However, John Steinbeck wrote several short novels, each a brilliant classic in its own right. Readers can now enjoy six of those novels in one volume. These quick reads make an excellent introduction to classic works of literature.

9798217040933 The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

The Outsiders is about a town divided by social class, and the two boys who find themselves in serious trouble when the opposing sides collide. S. E. Hinton wrote this enduring classic when she was 16, and it was later adapted into a cult-classic film, a television series, and a 2024 Tony Award-winning musical. It transformed young adult literature and became a must-read for generations of teen readers.

9780143129400 Lord of the Flies by William Golding

A scary pre-cursor to today’s dystopias, the message of this one is pretty clear (though Golding himself claims there’s no symbolism to some of the more terrifying imagery). Golding’s horror story reads quickly and addictively. It will not, however, restore anyone’s faith in humanity.

9780143123163 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Any young-adult fiction fan who loves the genre’s romances doesn’t truly know romance until they’ve read some Austen. And Pride and Prejudice is probably her premier work. Despite the dated setups and marital arrangements, in Lizzie Bennett, teen girls will find a modern, headstrong heroine.

9780452284241 Animal Farm by George Orwell

Though 1984 may be Orwell’s best-known work (and also worth the read), this one’s fairy tale vibe makes it good starter fare. Because the revolutionary farm animals all play a role in what’s ultimately a political allegory, some note-reading can be beneficial, but the story and some of the symbolism are easily parsed without too much outside help.

9780147514011 Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

As important as it is entertaining, Alcott’s novel is considered a major influence and advancer of the feminist movement. Girls and young women today still identify with Alcott’s March sisters. Much of the March girls’ quests to find their identity through domesticity, work, and true love still resonate today, making it an eminently readable and conversant classic.

Some kids have a natural affinity for reading. They’re the kids who not only have a favorite book but often find almost any reading material interesting. Other kids need more encouragement to explore the world of reading. The best motivation for a reluctant reader is to entice them with books they can’t help but love.

Graphic novels create a natural entry point for turning a reluctant reader into a book lover. These selections are full of humor – wordplay, slapstick, silly scenarios, and oddball premises – that make them irresistible.

Pro tip: Don’t impose these on your stubborn reader. Merely show them the book and say, “This one looks like something you might like.” Leave it on a table or the arm of the couch and (stealthily) watch. They’re sure to pick it up and be chuckling soon.

Here are 14 of the best.

The post 14 Must-Have Books for 3-Year-Olds appeared first on Brightly.

]]>
My once-upon-a-time three-year-old is now a big ol’ five-year-old (correction: he’d say “five-and-a-half”) but I still remember our go-to picture books from that age. Now I look forward to the days when I can trot out the same reads for my toddler, who will be three before I know it! And if we’re lucky, my older son will be the one pulling these from the bookshelf to read to his baby brother and me.

no no 9780307119384 All by Myself (Little Critter) by Mercer Mayer

Mayer’s Little Critter has become one of the most enduringly popular characters in the children’s book world. Funny and relatable, little ones easily see themselves in Critter’s many adventures growing up. This particular story relates to kids who want to do everything without help from their parents. Sound like any three-year-olds you know? From buttoning his overalls to tying his shoes, Critter is determined to do it all by himself. The one thing he can’t do on his own just yet? Read a bedtime story. Aw!

9780670012954 Little Owl’s Night by Divya Srinivasan

Set under a silver moon, this soothing story follows curious Little Owl as he glides through the forest saying good-evening to hedgehogs, skunks, and frogs. The lush nighttime scenes feel wonderfully cozy, and by the time Mama Owl whispers what daytime is like, even energetic toddlers are ready to tuck their wings and drift off.

9780399257131 The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle

Eric Carle hands kids a paintbrush and permission to let their imaginations run wild. A red crocodile, a polka-dotted donkey, and (of course) a brilliantly blue horse parade across bold spreads that practically beg young readers to shout out colors and dream up masterpieces of their own. It’s the perfect pick for rainy-day art sessions and impromptu fridge-gallery exhibitions.

9780399256028 You Are a Lion! by Taeeun Yoo

Story time meets stretch time in this exuberant introduction to yoga. Simple prompts invite kids to “roar like a lion,” “flutter like a butterfly,” and “hiss like a snake,” turning each pose into a burst of imaginative play that channels wiggles into calm, confident movement — no yoga mat (or jungle) required.

9780451469908 Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney

A delightful and prolific series, Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama is a reader favorite. The magic began back in 2005 with Llama Llama Red Pajama, a rhyming read-aloud that finds young Llama Llama feeling nervous about falling asleep by himself — and Mama Llama coming to the rescue. This extra-special edition includes a CD audio recording of Dewdney reading the story, bonus Llama Llama tales, and even a keepsake print. It’s the perfect place to start with the beloved series, or an exciting new addition to your collection.

9780593094396 The Little Engine That Could: 90th Anniversary Edition by Watty Piper, illustrated by Dan Santat

An absolute classic since it was first published in 1930, The Little Engine That Could is still charming readers worldwide. We love this 90th anniversary edition, which features illustrations by Caldecott Medal winner Dan Santat and an introduction by Dolly Parton. It pays homage to the original illustrations while adding even more life and cheerful triumph to the timeless story of perseverance.

9780803736801 Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, illustrated by Daniel Salmieri

This silly book about, you guessed it, dragons that love tacos (and parties!), is a huge hit with the preschool set. The illustrations are entertaining and include subtle jokes that are fun to find as the storyline becomes more familiar.

9780593226797 How to Say Hello to a Worm by Kari Percival

If your three-year-old loves digging in the dirt, this playful “how-to” guide is their new field manual. Friendly, direct text shows little gardeners how to greet squirmy worms, pat pea shoots, and admire every wiggly, muddy miracle hiding in the backyard, turning outdoor exploration into a joyful ritual of respect for nature.

9780140505399 Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney

Every time we read this timeless classic, my preschooler starts scheming ways to “make the world more beautiful” just like Alice Rumphius does. From globe-trotting adventures to seaside days spent sprinkling lupine seeds, the story gently plants big ideas about caring for our planet in the hearts of even the smallest listeners — and the riot of purple, pink, and blue flowers on every page is pure magic for budding nature lovers.

9780399247491 The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers

Charmed by the illustrations, my son chose this read as a vacation souvenir from City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco. The story of a boy who eats books — and gets smarter as a result — quickly became my son’s most-read picture book, causing us to seek out Jeffers’s other picture books. As a book-loving mama, you can imagine my heart-leaping delight when I overheard my son tell friends at a bookstore that Oliver Jeffers is his favorite author. So, as you seek books for your child at any age, I mostly recommend letting them lead the way!

9780375973277 The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin

This sweet and whimsical picture book is an ode to the many bright possibilities children’s futures hold, and a reminder that their parents will always love them – no matter which direction their compass guides them. With simple, rhythmic text and gorgeous oil-painting illustrations, The Wonderful Things You Will Be impresses upon children that they are worthy of love and that it’s their inner qualities that matter most. Pair it with the companion growth chart to keep the positivity flowing.

9780307155108 Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever by Richard Scarry

Richard Scarry’s beloved, fun-filled universe is a surefire hit for little readers, and his Best Word Book Ever is especially ideal for vocab-building three-year-olds. All throughout Busytown, characters are getting ready for their days, starting art projects, and jetting off to the playground. There are so many words to express their activities and the objects they encounter! This colorful compendium will do wonders for your toddler’s verbal skills.

9780142403877 The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler

Ooh, I don’t want to spoil The Gruffalo if you haven’t read it, because it’s kids’ storytelling at its finest. The wonderfully rhymed tale of a mouse who invents a fearsome creature called the Gruffalo to ward off enemies is both amusing and a marvelous lesson in quick-thinking and imagination.

9780307157850 Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry

This was a book I remembered reading as a preschooler, so I trotted out my old copy when my son became vehicle-obsessed. But even if cars and trucks don’t rev your three-year-old’s engines, the hunt for Goldbug in each scene (each page is a busy burst of activity in Scarry’s magnificent style) will have them eager to explore.

In their world of sometimes-dull textbooks and term papers on often pre-assigned topics, it’s natural for teens to flock to fiction in their spare time. But they would be remiss to overlook some of the amazing nonfiction works that are equally captivating, thought-provoking, and even worldview-affecting. Here are 20 extra-compelling nonfiction books for teens that span all kinds of interests and curiosities.

no no 9781984849663 A Quantum Life (Adapted for Young Adults) by Hakeem Oluseyi and Joshua Horwitz

James Edward Plummer was a brilliant boy stuck in a bad situation. His high I.Q. and impoverished childhood were at odds with each other, which pushed him to find a bizarre balance between the two. After developing a drug addiction and getting accepted into the Physics Ph.D. program at Stanford University, James found a mentor who helped him tip the scales of his life into one of success. His inspiring story is a must-read!

9781984829801 The Faraway Brothers (Adapted for Young Adults) https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/595190/the-far-away-brothers-adapted-for-young-adults-by-lauren-markham/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Lauren Markham

A remarkable story of brotherhood, immigration, and finding home, The Faraway Brothers follows the lives of 17-year-old twins Ernesto and Raúl Flores, who are forced to flee El Salvador for America after being targeted by a local gang. While the journey itself is harrowing, so too are their lives as undocumented migrants. Ernesto and Raúl must adapt to all-new surroundings and anxiously await their immigration court hearing, all while experiencing the typical trials of adolescence.

9781838749101 An Illustrated History of Urban Legends by Adam Allsuch Boardman

Whether you love spooky urban legends or bizarre local lore, this book features some of the best stories and their histories. Vibrant illustrations and plenty of conspiracies, myths, and legends make this book a must-read for any reader who loves falling down weird rabbit holes.

9780593177044 Just Mercy (Adapted for Young Adults) by Bryan Stevenson

Through his work with the Equal Justice Initiative, attorney Bryan Stevenson fights every day for the vulnerable and wrongfully imprisoned, and also to reveal the inequities and racial bias of America’s criminal justice system. This YA adaptation of his bestseller — now a film starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx — relays the stories of Stevenson’s clients and how they wound up in the system. An eye-opening and galvanizing read.

9780593643563 The Swans of Harlem (Adapted for Young Adults) by Karen Valby

During the civil rights movement, The Dance Theater of Harlem made history as its members appeared on magazine covers, performed around the world, and blazed a trail on and off the stage. This nonfiction book spotlights five of these dancers and how their hard work and determination paved the way for Black ballerinas to have an equal chance at the spotlight.

9780525555414 Flowers in the Gutter by K. R. Gaddy

The tale of the Edelweiss Pirates reads like the most thrilling of war fiction, yet it’s the result of historian K. R. Gaddy’s meticulous research. These weren’t your typical pirates — rather, they were working-class German teenagers risking their lives to resist the Nazis during World War II. Their refusal of complacency, even as the Gestapo pursued and arrested them, is something we could all learn from.

9780593323991 American Wings by Sherri L. Smith and Elizabeth Wein

This book offers a fascinating look at aviation history and civil rights in the years between World War I and World War II. As aviation fever took hold in America, many young pilots dreamed of taking to the skies. Faced with prejudice in traditional aviation schools, a group of Black pilots started a flying club and airfield near Chicago. With World War II came an increased demand for pilots, and their school trained young men of all backgrounds to fly and fight for their country.

9780451471222 Bonnie and Clyde by Karen Blumenthal

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow have gone down in history (by their first names, at least), but in her part-biography, part-true crime narrative, journalist Karen Blumenthal pauses to ask — how did these two poor teens from west Texas wind up as outlaws in the first place? The result of her curiosity is a fascinating and heart-pounding tale of love and crime set against the backdrop of the Great Depression. A page-turner, indeed.

9781635928051 American Spirits by Barb Rosenstock

In 1848, Kate and Maggie Fox claimed they could talk to the spirit that haunted their home. Guided by their older sister, Leah, the girls quickly rose to fame and fortune as they communed with spirits on the other side. However, as their reputation as mediums grew, so did the backlash from the press. This fascinating nonfiction book will captivate, thrill, and educate YA readers.

9780593649091 Hick by Sarah Miller

In Hick, readers are offered a meticulously researched and deeply engaging YA exploration of Lorena Hickok’s journey to becoming a celebrated journalist and Eleanor Roosevelt’s confidante and lover. Sarah Miller masterfully weaves a narrative that feels as compelling as any work of fiction, painting an intimate and well-rounded portrait of Hick, Eleanor, and their significant relationship. A must-read for fans of women’s history.

9781536213676 One in a Million: A Graphic Memoir by Claire Lordon

In December 2015, it was announced that every 16-year-old in Sweden would be given a copy of this book. Adapted from Adichie’s award-winning TEDx Talk of the same name (which blew up after Beyoncé sampled it), the book is a great stepping stone for discussions on gender roles and equity. Drawing from Adichie’s own experiences, it’s a key read for young women and men as they navigate the future together.

9781536230161 Wearing My Mother’s Heart by Sophia Thakur

For teens who love poetry, this heartfelt collection is a must-read. Sophia Thakur weaves together the narratives of three generations of women, their hopes, dreams, loves, and deepest thoughts. 9780375867828 The Family Romanov: Murder, Rebellion, and the Fall of Imperial Russia http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/205287/the-family-romanov-murder-rebellion-and-the-fall-of-imperial-russia-by-candace-fleming/9780375867828/?ref=PRH06C9ECE222&aid=randohouseinc22957-20&linkid=PRH06C9ECE222 by Candace Fleming

If truth is stranger than fiction, the Romanovs still get some kind of prize. Any teen who claims history is boring should get their hands on this book. (Adults should, too!) Fleming writes about Russia’s last royal family and its downfall in a gripping way, covering every spot of doom in its gilded halls (while also tending to the lives of the poor Russian masses). Fans of reality show drama will hold today’s camera-ready families to a much higher drama standard after reading this book.

9781536224214 Work with What You Got: A Memoir by Zion Clark and James S. Hirsch

Zion Clark was born without legs to an imprisoned and drug-addicted mother. The best memoirs are those that make you feel like the writer is a potential friend, even if their story is one that’s unfamiliar. In the case of Thrash’s graphic novel — a romantic, honest, and funny account of her falling hard for her female summer-camp counselor — the story does more than make you want to be one of Thrash’s friends. It makes you want to have under-the-stars big conversations with the ones you already have.

Chilling, heartbreaking, and impossible to set down, this well-researched book will keep readers enthralled from beginning to end.

 • LeBron James
 • Steven Spielberg
 • Taylor Swift
 • Serena Williams
 • The Wright Brothers

Cast your vote between now and April 27 by visiting YourHeroYourVote.com.

Oddly (or perhaps appropriately) enough, the Ordinary People Change the World series of picture book biographies began with a fairly common observation: Brad Meltzer, who has penned a number of bestselling adult thrillers, noticed his daughter’s clothing options all featured fictional heroes, including those of the princess variety. But instead of sigh and move on, Meltzer decided that if kids were going to have heroes, why not give them some real ones? In January 2014, the series launched with I am Abraham Lincoln and I am Amelia Earhart.

During their prime read-to-me years, little kids are apt to fall in love with the characters in their favorite picture books — and these real figures are a good place to start. Each Ordinary People Change the World story is told in a kid-friendly, conversational way and the back of each book includes a timeline of the subject’s life to inspire more learning.

Here are some of the best Ordinary People Change the World books featuring some of the most interesting “ordinary” people in world history:

yes yes Ordinary People Who Took a Stand

Kids can learn a lot from brave souls who worked to make the world more equal, even when it was at great personal risk. They’ll find much to admire in these bold thinkers and doers.

9780803740853 I am Rosa Parks 9780525428527 I am Martin Luther King Jr. 9780735228719 I am Harriet Tubman 9780735228740 I am Billie Jean King 9780525428510 I am Helen Keller 9780735228702 I am Gandhi 9780593533338 I am Ruth Bader Ginsburg 9780593405888 I am Malala Yousafzai yes yes Ordinary People from Early American History

If your child has an interest in how our country came to be our country, it’s key that they get a sense of the heroes who helped form it. So far, the early American history entries to the series include two presidents and one Native American trailblazer who guided an expedition West.

9780803740839 I am Abraham Lincoln 9780525428534 I am Sacagawea 9780525428480 I am George Washington yes yes Ordinary People Who Went First

It’s hard not to be inspired by people who heard, “It’s never been done!” and pushed forward anyway. These figures rightfully wouldn’t take no for an answer and leveraged qualities like exceptional daring and hard work to be the first in their fields.

But five minutes can be a glorious amount of time when you’re rightly equipped. These quick and easy reads are just right for a quick cuddle.

You could call it the “Finding Nemo” effect, but that wouldn’t be true; kids have always been fascinated by the world under the sea. Maybe it’s that it looks so different from what’s above ground, or that ocean life is its own rainbow. Or maybe I’m getting too poetic. Maybe my son just loves all things aquatic because he doesn’t yet have permission to go hang out underwater alone. Whatever the case, these 11 books are great for little ones enamored with marine life.
